Most healing is a forward-moving revolving circle, or perhaps a gradually ascending spiral, as opposed to a linear and predictable straight line. We always circle back to stuff we thought we had accepted and put behind us. When we circle back to "old" issues and find ourselves reacting with rage, frustration, sadness, despair, confusion, etc., we probably haven't healed as much as the ego's illusion led us to initially believe (flight into health?).
Each time we find ourselves spiraling back to an unresolved issue, it is important to practice more awareness, patience, acceptance, empathy, wisdom, and compassion than the previous go-around. Over time, with dogged persistence and non-attachment to a "preferred outcome," do we find the healing resolution we yearn to experience.
